For this reason, we have compiled this article with comprehensive information and tips.
As this fine example shows “Baby room design”, parents have to prepare themselves for some things. Numerous studies show that a healthy environment lays the foundations for a healthy development of the child. The offspring are particularly sensitive to environmental pollution and pollutants. The parents’ task is to protect their children from these burdens and to enable them to grow well so that they do not have to contend with the consequences. In addition to the health aspect, the ecological children’s room also focuses on the issue of environmental and resource conservation.
Interior design: Tips on painting, flooring and furniture
Children spend 90 percent of their time in the interior. Here children play, crawl over the floor, lie around and also gladly take the one or other toys in the mouth. According to this, the next generation of pollutants is automatically exposed to more exposure than adults. At their young age they discover and explore their environment and are not afraid to take them literally into their mouths. However, harmful substances also put children at risk because they have a higher basic turnover due to their growth. Children can take up to ten times more pollutants in the same environment than an adult. For this reason, the indoor climate and thus also the residential hygiene plays an important role, Only the parents can make sure that their child grows up in a safe and healthy environment. The three main points in the area of healthy indoor climate are paint, floor coverings and furniture.
Time: Healthy coats for the baby room
Blue or pink? For which color parents may choose, it is important that the colors in the children’s room are not only beautiful, but also allow water vapor to pass through. The wall must be able to breathe, only then no pollutants are released to the room air. Already small pollutant content is quickly negative due to the large amount of wall paint. The following colors are suitable for the baby room:
- Natural resin dispersion: A dispersion consisting of natural resins, waxes, oils, water, citrus peel oils, balsamterpentine oil and pigments. It is electrostatically charged only to a small extent and has a good vapor permeability.
- Lime paint: A cheap paint from water and slaked lime. Lime absorbs odors, reduces the risk of mold growth and disinfects.
- Silicate paint: Consists of chalk, potash water, color pigments and a small proportion of synthetic resins. For this color speak the antibacterial and fungicidal properties.
- Casein color: Its ingredients include casein, chalk, water, borax and milk. Casein colors are good covering, breathable and well covering.
- Glue color: This color consists of binding glues, water as well as chalk. Due to its water vapor permeability, it is suitable for living areas, but not for wet rooms.
Standing, sitting, running: Soils are heavily stressed
Babies can not stay on the floor for the first few weeks. A few months later, however, babies are already self-sufficient and begin to crawl around everywhere. For this reason, the choice of flooring is of great importance. It affects the cosiness of the children’s room and thus also the health of the small resident.
When choosing a material, parents must pay attention to the absence of harmful substances and, in particular, to avoid harmful substances which can be found in many products. When buying the typical flooring, look for the following:
- Linoleum: This material is electrostatically charged and is very hot. Pure linoleum is produced from renewable raw materials such as cork, wood, linseed oil, rock flour and jute fibers and therefore does not contain any harmful ingredients.
- Cork: This floor covering is warm, durable and elastic. Cork is made of crushed natural cork and a binder. PVC-coated cork tiles are not recommended, while natural and waxed varieties are already available.
- Carpet Floors: This flooring is also soft and warm. The wear layer is produced from natural fibers such as sisal, coconut, wool and jute or synthetic variants such as polyamide, polyolefins and polyester. Recommended are carpet floors made of jute and natural latex.
- Wood floors: Wood does not only give the floor a natural atmosphere, it also does not load with a natural surface treatment. Their durability and comparatively low maintenance costs make wood floors an economic flooring.
- Plastic floors: They make them easy to lay, are favorable and resistant. Unfortunately, they are not breathing-active and also invite themselves without an antistatic upgrade. Moreover, they are not produced from renewable raw materials but from petroleum products.
Eco-Furniture: Healthy room air for the baby
Similar to flooring, the material plays an important role in the furniture. Of course materials are particularly recommended. Unfortunately, when buying furniture for the baby room, many parents only pay attention to their look and practical use. Of course, rounded corners protect against injury, a certain stability and stable processing are also desired. Nevertheless, pollutants that escape from the children ‘s furniture influence the room air. Therefore, you should pay attention to the following:
- Avoid PVC and chipboard: In the case of coated chipboards, there is a risk that the environmental toxin “formaldehyde”, which is often referred to in the media, evaporates. In Germany only chipboards of grade E1 can be sold – with these products the concentration of the substance is minimal.
- Solid wood furniture: The healthy and ecological alternative to the aforementioned products are furniture made of wood from regional forests or products whose wood is endowed with the FSC seal of approval. This seal guarantees ecological forest management.
- Second hand: second-hand furniture has the advantage that it is cheap and any harmful substances are evaporated. From a health perspective, they are highly recommended. In addition, buying second-hand furniture reduces the waste and conserves resources.
